Butley Mills was a provender mill, producing food for livestock for local farmers and householders, having regular delivery rounds to the surrounding villages. Towards the end of the 20th century the gradual changes in country life styles and farming resulted in a decline in demand for these services. The family has now developed the old mill building into five apartments for self catering holidays. Structural changes have been kept to a minimum to retain the interesting and traditional external character of the building as original as possible. The modest sized windows have a truly wonderful outlook. To the west there are meadows with streams carrying water from Butley and Chillesford, which once fed the water wheel. To the east the view is over the tidal reed beds and the upper reaches of the Butley River. The nearby forest, the meadows, reed beds, mudflats and eventually the river allows a huge variety of wild life to flourish.
Straddling the parishes of Butley and Chillesford and overlooking Butley Creek, the four storey building Butley Mills stands on the side of a narrow lane and backs onto the original mill pond. It has been converted into five high standard self catering holiday apartments, each of an individual nature, but all enjoying wide views of the surrounding countryside. There are nine bedrooms in total, providing accommodation for a total of 18 people. The facilities include:
The enthralling and peaceful surroundings of the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) make this an ideal holiday base for bird watchers and country lovers. There are RSPB reserves close by at Havergate and Minsmere and the Breckland and the Norfolk and Suffolk coastlines are within easy reach. All this makes for:
"A holiday with the feel-good factor"
