Tea Room - Amazing Maize Maze - Visitor Attraction - Penrith - Ullswater

Opened in July 2006 The Hay Close Maize Maze was the first maze in the beautiful Eden Valley. Being a family business we care about you our visitors, we wanted to build a special place for you to bring the children and let them enjoy the experience of the country and what we do. We pride ourselves on being friendly and we want you to have fun. Situated near Calthwaite, Hay Close has been farmed by the Field family for over 50 years, mainly producing quality beef cattle, ewes and lambs and increasingly aiming to grow as many crops such as wheat and barley, which we then feed to our livestock, helping us become self sufficient and overall reducing bought in food miles.

Choose from a wide range of speciality teas or freshly brewed coffee, fresh scones with cream, homemade soups, quiches salads to Pannini's with a selection of fillings, including brie and grape! Alison makes a numerous choice of mouth watering tray bakes and cakes, including her speciality lemon drizzle cake which is simply delicious.

The Maze

The maize seed is sown in May and we then create the actual maze which covers some 30 acres and is based on agricultural themes, last year including the bulls head, a tractor and maize corn stems. This year our theme will again have an agricultural design, with the added benefit of a picnic area in the maize, well deserved when experiencing the heat of last year. There will be three graded mazes with times based from 30 minutes up to 2 ½ hours of exploring and of course getting lost, it's inevitable! The additional benefit of the maize is that it is grown as a feed. It's harvested in November and fed to our beef herd throughout the winter period. Maize is a very good source of starch for our cattle - they love it!
